The Panhandle Housing Complex located next to Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, is a project focusing on affordable co-housing. The building is situated in the parking lot of the San Francisco DMV. In order to not interrupt the existing parking, the building is situated above the lot, which also provides shade and protection for the cars. The orientation of the build was determined through sun, wind, and fog studies with the goal of optimizing natural daylight and energy efficiency. Operable wood panels run along the exterior corridors between units, adjusting to weather conditions accordingly to provide protection against the elements. In addition, each floor has a green roof which keeps the building cool and provides garden spaces for the residents.
